Role description:
Arcadis is seeking a Senior Structural Field Engineer with at least 15 years of experience and an extensive structural design background to provide senior construction-phase engineering support on major heavy-civil and infrastructure works. This role is deliberately intended for an experienced designer who can apply deep knowledge of structural behaviour, design assumptions and code requirements to complex site conditions. The successful candidate will assess construction issues, review contractor submissions, complete focused design checks, protect the Engineer of Record’s design intent and determine when a field matter can be resolved through construction support and when it requires formal design action by the responsible design team or EOR.
Role accountabilities:
In this role, you will provide senior structural engineering support for permanent works, temporary conditions, and construction interfaces across complex infrastructure projects. You will conduct field reviews and evaluate construction activities against IFC drawings, specifications, approved shop drawings, design criteria, applicable codes, and the Engineer of Record’s requirements. Drawing on your extensive design experience, you will confirm the structural significance of inspection findings, survey data, test results, field measurements, and as-built conditions.
You will play a key role in resolving technical issues by reviewing structural RFIs and technical queries, shop drawings, method statements, ITPs, material submissions, erection and lifting proposals, welding documentation, and contractor calculations. You will assess dimensional conflicts, deviations, non-conformances, temporary conditions, repair concepts, proposed changes, and construction sequencing issues, while completing or directing focused structural calculations and design checks to support practical, technically sound resolutions.
Working closely with structural designers, geotechnical and marine engineers, field teams, quality personnel, contractors, and client representatives, you will help navigate multidisciplinary challenges and keep construction moving safely and efficiently. You will provide senior review of concrete, reinforcing steel, structural steel, embedded items, connections, foundations, retaining structures, marine structures, and temporary works interfaces as applicable. You will also identify matters requiring formal design revisions, EOR review, additional investigation, work holds, or escalation, clearly communicating the appropriate path forward.
You will produce clear field review reports, technical memoranda, sketches, marked-up drawings, calculations, and recommendations suitable for the project record. You will support urgent construction issues without bypassing formal design-change and professional-authentication processes, mentor field engineers, and promote consistent, technically defensible construction-support practices. Throughout the role, you will maintain clear professional boundaries, recognizing that construction review does not transfer responsibility for means, methods, sequencing, safety, or quality control from the contractor.
Qualifications & Experience:
- Bachelor’s degree in civil or structural engineering; a master’s degree in structural engineering is preferred
- Professional Engineer registration in British Columbia in good standing, or the ability to obtain registration before assuming delegated professional responsibilities
- Minimum 15 years of progressive structural engineering experience with extensive structural design experience
- Substantial construction-phase engineering and field-review experience on major infrastructure, heavy-civil, transportation, marine, bridge, tunnel, or industrial projects
- Demonstrated expertise in reinforced concrete and structural steel design, detailing, connections, temporary conditions, and construction sequencing
- Experience with deep foundations, retaining structures, marine works, cut-and-cover construction, or similar complex infrastructure
- Strong working knowledge of Canadian structural codes and standards relevant to assigned works, including CSA A23.3 and CSA S16
- Proven experience reviewing RFIs and technical queries, shop drawings, field changes, non-conformances, repairs, and contractor submissions
- Ability to complete and check structural calculations and communicate technically defensible decisions under construction time constraints
- Excellent judgment, technical writing, leadership, and stakeholder-management skills
Role requirements
- Full-time site-based position supporting active work fronts
- May be required for day or night activities, critical lifts, concrete placements, temporary works changes or urgent structural issues
- The role must coordinate closely with the responsible design team and EOR and must not independently assume design authority outside delegated scope
