Drywall taper and finisher job in Vancouver
$30 to $42 an hour
Full time, Vancouver and the Lower Mainland
Finishing is the part of this trade customers actually see, so it is the part we pay most for. The top of that band is not decoration. It is what a finisher who can hold a Level 5 skim flat and still get off site on Thursday is worth to us. We are always open to hearing from people who can do that, rather than filling a numbered vacancy this week.

The work
What the day actually involves
Finishing is a sequence with drying time built into it, and most of the ways it goes wrong are ways of trying to beat that drying time.
- Working to a named finish level
Every quote we write names a GA-214 level, so you know before you start whether a wall is Level 4 or Level 5 and you are not guessing at what the customer paid for. Level 3 behind tile, Level 4 as the usual residential finish, Level 5 where the light is going to be cruel.
Tape coat, fill coat, finish coat, each one thinner and wider than the last. Three thin coats beat one thick one and they crack far less. Chasing a wall flat in two coats because the schedule slipped is how tape lifts a year later, and we would rather move the schedule.
- Butt joints, feathered wide
The butt joint is the whole test of a finisher, because there is no recess to hide in. Ours go out roughly 10 to 12 inches each side by the final pass so there is no edge for raking light to catch. Anyone can make a tapered seam disappear. Butts are where you can tell who taped a room.
- Picking the right compound
Setting-type cures chemically and comes in 20, 45 and 90 minute versions, so it keeps a job moving in February when drying-type will sit wet all day. Drying-type sands far more easily, which matters on the last coat. Knowing which one the weather and the deadline call for is a paid skill here.
Inside corners that are actually straight and outside bead set true, filled and feathered into both walls. Hallway corners and kitchen islands take abuse for the next twenty years, and a bead that was bedded badly shows up as a cracked line within one.
The unglamorous half of the trade. Vacuum sanding and containment because the customer is paying for a clean handover, then primer on the repair or the finished surface so their paint does not flash. Sanding is filthy regardless of how well you contain it.
The standard
Level 5 is what moves your pay to the top
We name a GA-214 level in every quote, which is unusual in residential work and it is deliberate. It means the customer knows what they bought and you know what you owe them. No arguments on the last day about whether a wall was meant to be flat.
Level 4 covers most residential jobs and it is what a flat wall paint needs. Level 5 adds a skim coat across the whole surface, and it is what a wall wants when there is a window raking light along it, when the paint has any sheen above eggshell, or when the customer is the kind who will stand at the far end of a room and look sideways at it. Both are real skills. Only one of them is rare.
Being able to hold a full-surface skim flat, sand it without digging in and hand it over clean, at a pace that still lets the job finish, is the single thing that puts a finisher at $42 rather than $30. If you can do that, lead with it and show us photos taken with light across the wall rather than straight on.
We will also be straight about what we are not. We are not a union shop. BC collective agreements in commercial and institutional work pay journeyperson tapers and finishers above $42 an hour, and if that is what you want, go and get it. What is here instead is residential and strata work, fixed-price so nobody is padding hours, at the top of the open market.
What you need to have
- Three years or more taping and finishing, with photos of finished work
- A butt joint you are willing to have looked at under raking light
- Your own tools, knives, hawk or pan and sanding gear
- A valid BC driver's licence and your own transport between sites
- The judgement to leave a coat alone until it is ready
- No certification, because BC has no compulsory drywall trade certification
Texture matching, repair blending and priming experience all help, since a good share of our finishing work is patches in occupied rooms rather than empty new builds.
Before you apply
Two things about finishing that ads never mention
Both are permanent features of the trade rather than problems we are about to solve.
Sanding is genuinely filthy work
Gypsum dust ends up in your hair, your ears, your eyes and every pocket you own. Vacuum sanding and containment cut down what reaches the customer's house, which is what they are paying for. They do not make the last two hours of a finishing day pleasant.
Wear the respirator. We supply the containment gear and the vacuums, and we would rather spend twenty minutes masking than have a strata owner find dust in a bedroom.
The damp season moves your week around
Compound will not dry on schedule in a Vancouver February, and there is no trick that fixes that. Setting-type compound and heat get us most of the way, and the rest is accepting that a coat is not ready.
So you get moved between sites more in winter, and the sequence you were told on Monday changes. Nobody here is going to ask you to sand a wet coat to protect a date, because we are the ones who come back for free when the tape lifts.
Questions
About This Role Specifically
What pay can I expect as a taper and finisher here?
$30 to $42 an hour. It is published because BC's Pay Transparency Act requires a range on any public job ad, and because most finishers have no way of knowing whether an offer is reasonable until they see numbers.
For reference, WorkBC puts the provincial rate for plasterers, drywall installers and finishers and lathers at $22.00 low, $30.00 median and $39.84 high from 2025 Job Bank data, and Job Bank's drywall taper figures for the Lower Mainland to Southwest region run $21.34 to $39.84 with a $28.07 median. Our band starts at the provincial median and its top clears both highs. The reason it goes that high is Level 5.
What actually gets me to the top of the band?
Level 5 work that holds up under raking light, done at a pace that makes commercial sense. That is the honest answer. A skim coat over the full surface, sanded properly, on a wall that is going to get a gloss paint or sit under a window, is the hardest thing in this trade to do quickly and well.
Owning your tools, being able to run a strata unit unsupervised for a day and holding a valid licence all matter too. Years do not. We have met fifteen-year finishers who leave visible butt joints and five-year finishers who do not.
Do you use automatic taping tools or is this all hand work?
Mostly hand and knife work, because our jobs are residential, strata units and repairs where the runs are short, the rooms are cut up and setting up a bazooka does not pay for itself. If you have only ever run automatic tools on big commercial jobs, say so, and be honest about your hand finishing.
Bring the tools you actually work with. Nobody is going to make you work in a way that slows you down for the sake of it.
How do the wet Vancouver months affect finishing work?
They change how you plan a coat rather than whether you work. Drying-type compound loses its water to the air, and Vancouver afternoons from October through March average roughly 76 to 82 percent relative humidity, so a coat that would go off overnight in summer can want a day and a half.
What that means day to day is setting compound on the early coats, heat and ventilation where we can get them, and being moved to a second site while the first one dries. Getting talked into sanding a coat that is not ready is the one thing we will not have. It shrinks, it cracks, and we go back for free.
Will I be sent out on repairs as well as full jobs?
Yes, and they are a decent part of the work. A patch in a hallway in Kitsilano where the customer is standing behind you, a ceiling stain in Mount Pleasant, four small things in one house booked into one visit.
Repairs are a different skill from a full house of new board. Texture matching, blending into paint that has faded, working in a furnished room without wrecking anything, and priming so the patch does not flash. If you like invisible-patch work you will get plenty of it.
